One place I cannot recommend enough to visit with kids too is South Tyrol in North Italy. It combines the pros of Austria (and to an extent Germany) with those of Italy in beautiful ways. You got medieval castles and cute towns, huge apple orchards and tall mountains, but also mediterranean climate in the lower regions, an incredible cuisine and wines, and a certain laid-back lifestyle that I admire. Best of both worlds, really.
