Thank you so much! I have a few suggestions from fellow travel bloggers about where to stay.

One option is to stay in Bologna and visit Rome and Florence by train. Bologna is much less touristy, better value, brilliantly connected to those cities (and others) by high speed rail links and is gorgeous in its own right. Check out Mums do Travel for more info.

Another option is to stay in the University District in Rome, far less touristy and much more reasonable. Plus lots of great little eating spots.

And finally…

We stayed in Hotel Fortyseven in Rome but it was over 10 years ago. It was brand new then but still gets v good reviews so maybe worth suggesting.
